Dick Van Patten died at a Santa Monica hospital Tuesday morning. He was 86.

The “Eight is Enough” star died from complications from diabetes, his rep confirmed in a statement.

“I am sorry to report this sad news,” the rep said. “His family will not be doing any press at this time.”

The veteran actor was born in 1928, and only seven years later he made his Broadway debut, eventually starring in over 27 Broadway plays.

Soon enough he became a recognizable face on television, and was best known for his role as Tom Bradford, the goofy dad on “Eight is Enough.” The show aired from 1977 to 1981.
