A slew of missing and dead women in a small Ohio town has authorities saying they may have a serial killer on their hands.
At least six women have gone missing in just over a year in sleepy Chillicothe, Ohio, with four of their bodies washing up on the shores of nearby streams or creeks, The Washington Post reports.
Tiffany Sayre, 26, was reported missing May 11 and found dead Saturday wrapped in a white sheet with her head duct taped in a drainage pipe. This latest death and the the recent deaths in Chillicothe, population 21,000, has investigators thinking the worst: Ohio has a serial killer.
“I don’t want to come out and say ‘yes, we have a serial killer,’ but it’s a small community that we live in … and the number of females who have come up missing, and then the bodies that we’ve found, that’s quite a bit for our community,” Staff Lt. Mike Preston of the Ross County Sheriff’s Department, who said a serial killer is a real possibility, told The Washington Post.
The FBI is creating a profile in case fears that a serial killer to blame are confirmed.
Authorities say most of the women struggled with drug addiction and worked as prostitutes to pay for their habit.
“Somebody did this,” Shelly Hehr told the Chillicothe Gazette. “Somebody is responsible, and somebody knows who is responsible. I know, if you are scared, you might not want to come forward, but you should be scared if you don’t come forward because, if somebody doesn’t come forward and help stop this, you don’t know who could be next.”
Charlotte Trego, the first woman to disappear, is still missing along with Wanda Lemons, a 37-year-woman with five children. Police are still searching for the missing women and investigating the deaths.
