A Minnesota sheriff deputy was caught on camera throwing and hitting his K-9 partner, and now faces criminal charges.

Ramsey County Sheriff’s Deputy Brett Arthur Berry, 48, was arrested around 3 a.m. June 15 when Black Bear Casino notified police of an animal cruelty incident caught on camera.

The video shows Berry walking with his K-9 partner through the parking lot. At one point he picks up the dog by the collar and throws him to the ground. The canine then proceeds to run towards casino doors, and gets trapped within an entryway, where Berry is then shown hitting the dog.

Berry was at the casino to attend an event hosting K-9 training and certification.

“Deputy Berry was sent home from the K-9 trials and placed on administrative leave,” said the sheriff’s office said to CBS Minnesota, adding that, “ The K-9 was evaluated by a veterinarian and no injuries were found. The K-9 partner is currently in the care of others.”

Earlier in the night, casino security had asked Berry to leave the casino’s Cobalt Lounge for unknown reasons.

Berry was arrested and charged with assaulting a public safety dog and animal cruelty, both misdemeanor counts.
