Islamic State launched a recent campaign to keep militants from breaching operational security by disclosing potentially harmful information online, jeopardizing strategic planning.

Known as the Media Cover-Up, Islamic State released a list of what tech-savvy fighters should avoid posting on social media last Thursday, as jihadis launched fresh attacks against the northern Syrian cities of Kobani and Hasakah, Vocativ reported.

Islamic State banned information on the movement of fighters, attacks in certain places, the manufacturing of new weapons, current or past battle plans and the locations of military sites.

It warned militants about posting pledges of allegiance from groups or individuals, pictures of Islamic State fighters (especially foreigners), the effort to camouflage vehicles or members’ whereabouts, deployment and images that expose fighters’ locations.

One Islamic State fighter couldn’t resist taking a selfie on a base in early June, leading to an airstrike on the terror group’s location less than 24 hours after the image was posted online. (RELATED: ISIS Selfie Provides Intel For US Airstrike)

An Islamic State supporter tweeted: “The state [Islamic State] is fighting spies to intimidate them and those who sent them. Don’t accidentally betray your brothers #becareful #media cover-up.”

As the U.S. Navy’s been saying since WWII, “Loose lips sink ships.”
