A high school English teacher in the rural northeastern corner of North Carolina was arrested this week on charges that she had a month-long fling with a student.

The teacher is Kimberly Lynne Umphlett, reports local NBC affiliate WAVY-TV.

Umphlett, 24, had been a teacher at Currituck County High School. Police investigators say she had “inappropriate conduct and sexual contact with a student.”

Police believe the trysts began in April and continued for about a month.

The last encounter between Umphlett and the student was around the day when the student revealed the relationship to another teacher at Currituck County High, police say.

That teacher contacted school administrators, who then contacted police.

Local news reports fastidiously do not indicate whether the student is male or female. However, the student is identified as a male teenager by the Daily Mail and Boston Newstime.

Umphlett’s Facebook page indicates that she is — or was — an employee at Dirty Dick’s Crab House, a seafood restaurant in Avon, N.C., notes The Inquisitr.

Yelp users generally praise Dirty Dick’s. It’s “a tourist trap complete with gift shop” which boasts a “fun environment” and “absolutely outstanding food and service.” “Their hush puppies are awesome” and “you get a souvenir cup” when you order drinks.

Umphlett’s name has been scrubbed from the Currituck County High website, though the Internet Archive shows she had been listed there previously.

On Monday, a grand jury indicted the English teacher on a felonious sex offense charge. On Tuesday, she turned herself in. She was processed and quickly released on $5,000 bail.

Umphlett, a teacher at Currituck County High since 2013, resigned May 18. She had been suspended with pay May 12, according to area CBS affiliate WTKR.
