Did Anonymous Warn About The NYSE Outage?

A Twitter account tied to the online hacktivist group Anonymous may have foretold Wednesday’s sudden outage of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in a tweet Tuesday.

The curious tweet was made by the account @YourAnonNews, the largest Twitter account tied to the group, with over 1.4 million followers.

The tweet, made at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday night, came less than 12 hours before the NYSE announced technical glitches were forcing it to suspend trading. The timing, if nothing else, is exceptional.

If Anonymous is at all related to the outage, it certainly isn’t gloating. The account has made only a few tweets today, none of which mention the outage or Wall Street in any way.

Anonymous’s activism can be unpredictable, reflecting its very loose, largely unofficial nature. However, groups claiming the Anonymous mantle have opposed Wall Street in the past, with several members participating in the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The NYSE says it believes the shutdown is due to an internal technical glitch and there is currently no evidence of a cyberattack, a position that has been seconded by the Department of Homeland Security and the White House.
