Beijing police rescued a newborn baby girl flushed down a public toilet in Beijing this week.

The tiny girl was wedged face down in a toilet pipe, when police responded to reports of the sound of an infant crying, reported CNN. Police initially planned to dismantle the toilet, but opted to risk pulling her out by hand to save time.

“Her head was upside down and her body was falling into the drain,” the local police chief reportedly told the Beijing Times. “We could only vaguely see her feet from the side.”

“She just kept crying,” he added. “I looked again, and thought we should try to pull her out even if the possibility [of her survival] might be slim.”

The moment an officer pulled her out of the toilet was captured in this photo:

The baby girl was reported in stable condition at a nearby hospital, and does not have any visible defects.

“When girls are selectively aborted or abandoned, this conveys the message that females do not deserve to live,” Reggie Littlejohn, president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, said in an emailed statement Thursday. “Gendercide is the most violent form of discrimination against women and girls.”

It’s illegal for unmarried women to have children in China, Littlejohn added. Women who refuse to have an abortion may be forcibly aborted.

“Perhaps the woman who abandoned her daughter was unmarried and fell into desperation, thinking she had no alternative,” Littlejohn said.

Police are reportedly still searching for the girl’s mother.
