A Ferguson protest commemorating the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown’s death turned violent Sunday.

Police say a man and police officers exchanged gunfire at the rally, putting the man in critical condition, The New Orleans Advocate reports.

Police say they had been tracking the man, who allegedly used a stolen weapon. Last reports said the man, who is in his late 20’s, had to undergo surgery.

Police say the man approached an unmarked police van and opened fire on the van and four officers got out and opened fire. When the man took off running, police chased him.

The man allegedly turned again to fire on police and the officers fired again, shooting the man multiple times.

The officers were put on administrative leave, which is protocol. They were not wearing body cameras. Three officers have been injured so far in the protests.

The protests have been going for three days, with five arrests total.
