Hackers divulged the personal information obtained from a cyber attack on the online adultery website Ashley Madison, and it appears some members of the D.C. government frequented the website.

The hackers, according to media reports, who call themselves the Impact Team, harvested the client records of around 36 million people who signed up to have affairs on the website.

“Life is short. Have an affair,” The Ashley Madison website tagline reads.

Nearly 15,000 of the email addresses leaked in the database intrusion appear to come from either “.mil” or “.gov” designees, which are given to members of the military and government workers, respectively.

Impact Team released the nearly 10 gigabytes of raw data via a dark web based .Tor website, accessible only through advanced means. However, one social media user put together a spreadsheet detailing how many email addresses came from each government agency.

Among those looking for extra-marital affairs on the website were emails associated with at least 22 purported D.C. government employees.

Without naming any names, a cross-reference between the leaked email addresses and LinkedIn accounts shows:

  • A librarian
  • A fairly prominent city judge
  • A former police officer
  • Several firefighters
  • A city architect
  • A Public Charter School Board Member

Aside from personally contacting each of the email addresses obtained in the data breach, there is no real way of knowing if these were real city government employees trying to cheat on their spouses.

No one from Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office or the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department returned queries concerning employees who may or may not have been seeking love on the website.
