A Louisiana State Trooper was fatally shot in the head Sunday during a traffic stop near Lake Charles.

“I am very saddened to report that Senior Trooper Steven Vincent has passed away this morning from the gunshot wounds he suffered yesterday in conjunction with a traffic investigation,” said Col. Mike Edmonson, of the Louisiana state police, said in a statement posted to Facebook. “As an organization, we are heartbroken over this senseless and tragic death.”

The Washington Post reports that Vincent was allegedly shot and killed by 54 year old Kevin Daigle. The incident between Vincent and Daigle was recorded on video. Edmonson told reporters at a news conference Daigle that Daigle used a sawed off shotgun to kill Vincent when trooper approached Daigle’s truck which appeared to be stranded in a ditch.

“You could hear him breathing, telling him, ‘You’re lucky. You’re lucky — you’re going to die soon.’ That’s the words that came out of his mouth,” Edmonson said.

Other motorists pulled to the side of the road and wrestled the gun away from Daigle, and held  him until other law enforcement arrived. Daigle has been charged with first degree murder.
