The number of murders this year in Washington, D.C. topped 100 Saturday afternoon after a 24-hour police standoff left a woman dead.

The barricade situation started Friday around 11 a.m. after a 67-year-old man shot and killed a woman before barricading himself inside his home in Northeast D.C., The Washington Post reports.

Roosevelt Robinson, 67, allegedly shot Loretta Carswell, 63, in front of his house following a family dispute, according to WTOP. While details are scarce, police were able to apprehend Robinson without incident.

Police say two other people were fatally shot overnight Saturday, bringing the total homicide count to 101 this year.

The number of murders is up more than 40 percent over the same time last year. Just 72 homicides were reported as of Aug. 23, 2014, according to data provided by the Metropolitan Police Department.

While the number of murders this year in D.C. is up significantly, other cities across the country are seeing a similar spike in murder numbers.

Baltimore has seen 212 murders so far this year and New York has seen 208. Baltimore, though, has far less residents than New York. New York has more than eight million residents, while Baltimore has just 622,000. The population in D.C. is just more than 650,000.

The huge spike in murder numbers has left D.C. city leaders scrambling to try and stem the tide of violence.

Mayor Muriel Bowser sent a letter to city residents last week offering a reward of as much as $10,000 for information that leads to the recovery of an illegal gun.

Bowser also suggested making “legislative changes” to city laws in an effort to stop gun violence in a city that already has some of the most stringent gun laws in the nation.
