The Louisiana state police officer shot in the head over the weekend died Monday morning, Louisiana State Police said in a statement. Senior Trooper Steven Vincent sustained cataclysmic head injuries when he was shot during a routine stop Sunday night.

“As an organization, we are heartbroken over this senseless and tragic death,” Louisiana State Police said in a statement announcing the death. “Steven was proud to serve as a Louisiana State Trooper and we were proud to count him among our ranks.”

The alleged attacker Kevin Daigle, 54, is in police custody after onlookers saw what happened and tackled him.

Vincent had stopped to help Daigle, whose truck had been turned sideways in a ditch, and was suspected of being drunk. Police say the video shows Daigle shot Vincent for no apparent reason.

Daigle then walked over to the fallen officer and began speaking to him as he tried to call for help.

“You could hear him breathing, telling him, ‘You’re lucky. You’re lucky – you’re going to die soon.’ That’s the words that came out of his mouth,” Col. Mike Edmonson Edmonson told reporters.

“This loss exacts an enormous emotional toll on the State Police family, but we will do what is necessary and proper to honor Steven and support those who knew and loved him,” the statement reads. “He will be missed but never forgotten.”
