A 13-year-old Washington, D.C., girl who was caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting Sunday night has recovered and is awake and walking.
Taije Chambliss was walking home from the library in the early evening of Sunday night when she was hit by a stray bullet shot out of a moving car, WUSA9 reports.
Chambliss had been working on homework assignments at the library before packing up for the night and heading home.
Just as she arrived at her house, a man ran past her, through her house, and out the back. Men in a blue sedan pulled up and just started firing at the house, seemingly unconcerned with Chambliss and her sibling standing outside the house.
Chambliss was hit by bullets in both of her legs. Her neighbors were able to pull her inside a near-by house where they alerted police.
The seventh grader, Chambliss, is now recovering in a hospital and her family says she is up and moving.
The shooting came amid an “all hands on deck” initiative launched by D.C. police to help curb some of the violent crime that has plagued the city in recent months.
So far this year there have been 105 murders committed in the nation’s capital, compared to 72 at the same time last year. That accounts for a 45 percent increase.(RELATED: There Are So Many Illegal Guns In DC, The Mayor Is Paying $10,000 To Get Them Off The Streets)
The initiative was part of a new plan announced by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser Thursday aimed at combating violent crime in the city.
The plan, dubbed “Safer, Stronger DC,” will put more officers on the streets in D.C.’s “hardest hit areas.”(VIDEO: DC’s Police Chief Accidentally Details What’s Wrong With Gun Laws)
While introducing the new initiative, Black Lives Matter protesters repeatedly interrupted the mayor, and the event devolved into a shouting match between the two sides.
The protesters were upset because Bowser’s police initiatives include a plan that will allow police officers to search people on probation or parole at will.
