Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley is leveraging a plea Hillary Clinton made in 2012 for more debates with Barack Obama against her in his own push for more primary debates.
O’Malley is in “complete” agreement with Clinton’s 2008 call for more debates, his deputy campaign manager told Business Insider. “Given the conviction with which Secretary Clinton’s campaign stated the need for more debates in 2008, we have no doubt that they will echo these calls again in 2016.”
O’Malley has been pushing for more debates, calling the current DNC primary debate schedule “ridiculous” and “less Democratic, and calling on his fellow candidates to defy a rule against participating in “unsanctioned” debates.
Clinton’s former campaign manager Maggie Williams made a plea for more primary debates in an April, 2008, letter to Obama’s campaign former campaign manager David Plouffe. At the time there had already been 20 debates, but Clinton wanted to face-off directly with Obama.
The American people “deserve more,” Williams wrote in the letter. “They deserve debates before casting their votes. They deserve debates just like the states who have participated in this invigorating process before them.”
The DNC primary debate schedule this cycle includes just four debates before the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary, and six in total. Candidates cannot participate in any “unsanctioned debate” or they will be banned from DNC debates.
