Images continue to emerge of Syrian child refugees, drowned while attempting to cross from Turkey to Greece.

The latest photograph to blaze across social media depicts the body of a drowned 3-year-old named Aylan Kurdi, washed up on the shore of a Turkish beach resort. A second photograph shows a policeman grimly carrying the corpse to safety.

The Greek island of Kos has become the first European destination for tens of thousands of Syrians, who four years into their homeland’s bloody civil war are looking to make a permanent life somewhere besides Turkey’s refugee camps. Once refugees enter Europe and apply for amnesty, they have unrestricted passage within the European Union — a rule which some E.U. countries have resisted. People from Africa are also attempting to enter Europe this summer, taking rafts from Libya across the Mediterranean. That crossing has claimed 2,500 lives so far this year, according to the U.N.’s refugee authority.

A common refrain among Syrian refugees is criticism of wealthier Middle Eastern countries, like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which have not allowed a single refugee to apply for asylum. A video which emerged several weeks ago showed a man calling out “Arab and Islamic countries” for denying them entry. (RELATED: Fleeing Syrians Swim Among Drowned Corpses In Chilling Video)
