Summer ended this weekend in the nation’s capital the same way it began — with violence and multiple murders.
Saturday night, police were called to the scene of a burning car in a Southeast D.C. neighborhood, The Washington Post reports. After the fire was put out, police discovered that there was a body inside.
Police could not identify the body, but they did discover the man had been fatally shot prior to being burned in the car.
In a separate incident that occured around 3 a.m. Sunday morning in Northwest D.C.’s Takoma neighborhood, another shooting left one man dead and another in jail, according to the Washington Times.
Police say Dejuan Etheridge, 27, shot and killed Uyer Hooper, 55, early Sunday morning. Another man was also injured during the gun fire.
Police did not disclose a motive for the shooting, but said Etheridge has been charged with first degree murder while armed.
The two weekend murders bring the city’s total murder count to 108 for the year, a more than 40 percent rise over the same time last year, and three more than the city saw in all of 2014.
The violence over Labor Day weekend paled in comparison to the amount seen over Memorial day weekend, the kick-off to a summer in the city plagued by killings.
Four people were killed in several different incidents over Memorial Day weekend. In a span of just eight hours, from Sunday night to Monday morning, six other people were shot and three people were injured in separate robbery attempts.
