Hillary Clinton announced her support for the Iran nuclear deal in a speech Wednesday, explaining, “Either we move forward on the path of diplomacy and seize this chance to block Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon. Or we turn down a more dangerous path leading to a far less certain and riskier future.”

“I support it as part of a larger strategy toward Iran,” Clinton, speaking at the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C., said. “By now, the outcome in Congress is no longer in much doubt, so we’ve got to start looking ahead to what comes next, enforcing the deal, deterring Iran and its proxies and strengthening our allies.”

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus strongly condemned the deal in a statement Wednesday by pointing out the widespread disapproval by voters and Congress.

“The Clinton-Obama Iran deal not only falls short of the Administration’s own goals, it empowers the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism while never ultimately blocking Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon,” Priebus said. “Hillary Clinton’s central role in crafting this dangerous agreement is one of the many examples of her failed record as Secretary of State.”

“Voters overwhelmingly oppose this deal, as does a bipartisan majority in Congress, because they know it will make the world less safe,” he added. “But with enough Democrat votes to protect the Clinton-Obama Iran deal and its secret side agreements, voters will have no choice but to hold Hillary Clinton accountable at the ballot box next year.”

Hillary Clinton: The stakes are high and there are no simple or perfectly satisfying solutions. So these questions and in particular the merits of the nuclear deal recently reached with Iran have divided people of goodwill and raised hard issues on both sides. Here’s how I see it. Either we move forward on the path of diplomacy and seize this chance to block Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon. Or we turn down a more dangerous path leading to a far less certain and riskier future. That’s why I support this deal. I support it as part of a larger strategy toward Iran. By now, the outcome in Congress is no longer in much doubt, so we’ve got to start looking ahead to what comes next, enforcing the deal, deterring Iran and its proxies and strengthening our allies.
