SpaceX CEO Elon Musk advised that in order to heat Mars up quickly to make it inhabitable by humans, “drop thermonuclear weapons over the poles.”
Musk, appearing on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Wednesday, explained that Mars is a “fixer upper of a planet,” but that we “can transform Mars into an Earth-like planet.”
Stephen Colbert: Another thing that you are talking about is you sincerely think that we should go to Mars. That men and women should go to Mars.
Elon Musk: Yeah.
Colbert: Why do we want to go to Mars? It’s uninhabitable.
Musk: It’s very inhospitable. That’s true.
Colbert: It is. Like you have to be in like domes and everything.
Musk: Initially, initially domes.
Colbert: Initially?
Musk
: Yes.
Colbert: Really, how long before we can turn Mars into someplace that we would live?
Musk: It is a fixer upper of a planet. So first, you’re going to have to live in transparent domes but eventually…
Colbert: Yes, we are going to be huffing each other’s stank.
Musk: But eventually we can transform Mars into an earth-like planet.
Colbert: How would you do that?
Musk: You’d warm it up. Just warm it up.
Colbert: With a blanket? How would you warm Mars up? It’s a long way from the sun.
Musk: There’s the fact way, there’s the fast way and the slow way.
Colbert: OK, give me the fast way.
Musk: The fast way is to drop thermonuclear weapons over the polls.
Colbert: You’re a super villain. That’s what a super villain does.
