The United States has six times the number of migrants as every Latin American country combined, although it has half the total population, a new chart from the Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest shows.

The U.S. is hosting 45.8 million migrants, while Latin American countries are hosting a combined 7.8 million migrants, according to the chart, which is based on United Nations data.

South America is hosting 5.1 million migrants, Mexico is hosting 1.1 million migrants, the Caribbean about 613,000 and Central America about 654,000. That’s a combined 7.8 million compared to the U.S. migrant population of more than 45 million.

The United States resettles more migrants than any other country in the world and is more generous to those they resettle in terms of funding and benefits, the subcommittee reports.

Although the U.S. makes up less than 5 percent of the global population, it takes in one in five of the world’s migrants. No other country has taken in more than one-twentieth of the world’s migrant population.
