New census data shows that as the U.S. foreign-born population continues its climb to new record highs its growth is also accelerating.
The increase per year has doubled since 2010, contributing to the largest foreign-born population ever recorded in the U.S., an analysis of census data by the Center for Immigration Studies, which wants to limit immigration, found. (RELATED: NYT, Brookings Show How Immigration Affects Wages)
The U.S. added 430,000 immigrants to its foreign-born population per year on average in 2010 and 2011, and 520,000 new immigrants in 2012. But in 2013 the U.S. added 1.04 million to its foreign-born population — nearly twice the earlier numbers.
Every year the U.S. admits hundreds of thousands of guest workers and issues one million green cards guaranteeing full benefits and a path to citizenship, on top of the illegal immigrants that continue crossing the southern border and tens of thousands of refugees and asylum-seekers. In 2014, the foreign-born population hit an all-time recorded high of 42.4 million — an increase of more than 325 percent since 1970. It’s on track to exceed 51 million by 2023, which would make up the largest percentage of the U.S. population ever recorded.
The countries that have sent the most immigrants since 2010 include India (up 426,000), China (up 353,000), the Dominican Republic (up 119,000), Pakistan (up 72,000) and Iraq (up 57,000). (RELATED: US Has Half The Population Of Latin America, Six Times The Migrants)
Immigration from Europe and Canada has declined since 2010.
The countries with the largest percentage increase in the number of immigrants living in the U.S. since 2010 include Saudi Arabia (up 93 percent), Bangladesh (up 37 percent), Iraq (up 36 percent) and Egypt (up 25 percent).
