California Rep. Darrell Issa explained that he goes on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” because “members who care look for people who are contrary to their views, have as large a medium as possible, and in fact challenge that status quo.”

“Politicians most often look for an easy softball or they look for a large media and if they get both, that’s great,” Issa suggested in an interview with filmmaker Patrick Gavin. But with Maher, he said, “he has a large audience, people don’t expect me there, and quite frankly he challenges everything I believe in as best he can.”

Issa most recently appeared on “Real Time” in January 2014. Maher called the congressman a “friend of ‘Real Time'” .
