Thousands of additional Hillary Clinton emails were released Wednesday, and one of them reveals that Clinton was very unhappy with a State Department decision intended to please gay rights activists.

On January 7, 2011, The Washington Post reported that U.S. passport applications would be altered so they no longer requested a person’s “Mother” and “Father” but instead simply included fields for “Parent One” and “Parent Two.” The move was made at the urging of gay rights groups, who wanted passport applications to account for nontraditional families with two male or female parents.

Clinton read the article, and quickly fired off an email to her top aides to complain.

“Who made the decision that State will not use the terms ‘mother and father’ and instead substitute ‘parent one and two’?,” Clinton asked, “I’m not defending that decision, which I disagree w[ith] and knew nothing about, in front of this Congress.”

Clinton said the State Department could have allowed those from nontraditional families to choose alternative descriptors, so long as using mother and father remained the “presumption.”

Clinton also said the department needed to move quickly, or else they would have to endure sharp attacks from none other than Sarah Palin.

“We need to address this today or we will be facing a huge Fox-generated media storm led by (Sarah) Palin et al.”

Clinton got her way. A few days later, the planned change was dropped.

At the time of the emails, Clinton was still officially opposed to same-sex marriage. She changed her position in 2013, and has since campaigned as a strong supporter of gay rights.
