Vice President Joe Biden took a not-so-subtle jab at Hillary Clinton Monday over her remark during last week’s Democratic presidential debate that she counts Republicans among her enemies.

“Darrell Issa, not a Republican friend of mine. He’s a friend,” Biden said at a mid-day White House event on climate change. “I don’t consider Republicans enemies, they’re friends.”

Biden’s comments appear to be a response to Clinton’s answer during last week’s debate in Las Vegas when candidates were asked to list their enemies.

“Well, in addition to the NRA, the drug companies, the insurance companies, the Iranians, um, probably the Republicans,” Clinton said to applause.

Clinton has long accused Republicans of engaging in a right-wing conspiracy against her and former President Bill Clinton. Those accusations have reached new heights as Republicans have latched onto Clinton’s use of a home-brew email system as secretary of state.

While Biden is known for his off-the-cuff speaking style, his remarks Monday likely have a political purpose since he is reportedly near a decision on whether or not to enter the Democratic presidential field.
