Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign manager David Plouffe insists that Hillary Clinton’s honest and trustworthy poll numbers are “concerning.”

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Wednesday, Plouffe suggested even Clinton’s campaign would “admit it too in the campaign, that they have to work on those.”

Plouffe cited Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, and the investigations the stemmed from it for causing a “tough period” for Clinton and her campaign during this election cycle. “Hopefully they’ve been able to turn the corner on that,” Plouffe said.

According to the latest Quinnipiac University Poll, 60 percent of respondents think Clinton is not honest and trustworthy, whereas only 36 percent say she is trustworthy. Plouffe said “those numbers are concerning” for Clintons 2016 election run.

Host Joe Scarborough pressed Plouffe — who is now supporting Clinton’s run for president in 2016 — on his comments from 2008 when he said the Clinton campaign was “running the lowest, gutter politics” campaign. Scarborough reminded Plouffe, who was then Obama’s campaign manager, that he went after Clinton’s character, “especially when she started the rumor that maybe Barack Obama wasn’t… a Christian… or an American.”

Plouffe acknowledged that Clinton’s 2008 campaign had some “low moments” because they were “struggling with how to deal with our ascension.”
