The American population has gotten exponentially fatter over the past two decades, and a new study shows how far the country has gone.

Mississippi took the prize as the fattest state, while Hawaii has the least amount of obese and overweight people, according to a study released Wednesday by the personal finance website WalletHub.

“In 2014, nearly 83 million Americans were completely inactive, the highest number reported since 2007. A sedentary lifestyle, or lack of physical activity, is one of the leading causes of obesity in addition to other factors such as genetics, emotional instability and lack of sleep,” the study reads.

The study ranked states based on the rates of overweight and obese residents and behavioral measures like inactivity, cholesterol and hypertension levels, vegetable intake and diabetes.

The majority of fat states are centered in the South, while Western states are, for the most part, in the healthy range.

This interactive map ranks states by their overall fatness measure. The darker blue states are more unhealthy, while the lighter states are generally healthier.
