Texas Rep. Kevin Brady won the House Ways and Means Committee chairmanship Wednesday, overtaking Ohio Rep. Pat Tiberi in a close race for the powerful gavel.

Wisconsin Republican Rep. Paul Ryan stepped down from the position last week to take over as Speaker of the House for John Boehner, who has resigned from Congress. The Republican Steering Committee nominated Brady over Tiberi in a closed-door meeting Wednesday after Ryan backed him, reported The Wall Street Journal.

The House Republican conference will almost certainly make the change official in a vote Thursday.

Tiberi’s friendship with Boehner and support of legislation like the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank made him a hard sell among conservatives in the party. The Heritage Foundation’s Daily Signal reported that “the key difference between the two lawmakers” was that Brady was opposed to the Ex-Im Bank.

“I’m a pro-growth conservative advancing a pro-growth agenda for House Republicans,” Brady told reporters according to TheWSJ. He’ll lead the party on key issues related to taxes, trade and entitlements as chairman of the committee.
