Rick Santorum blasted Donald Trump insisting that he “doesn’t understand” how polls and the election process of going state by state in a primary works.

Appearing on CNN’s “Wolf” on Thursday, Santorum said, “I never knew Donald Trump was afraid of competition,” referring to Trump’s claim that candidates who have been “campaigning for four or five months and they’re at zero or one or two percent, they should get out.” (RELATED: Trump: More Candidates Should Drop Out So That I Have ‘More Time’ To Speak [VIDEO])

Santorum said Trump “sort of surprises me he would say that. You know, competition is a good thing. Again this I think shows a little bit of the lack of understanding of how the system works.”

We don’t have a national primary,” explained Santorum. “We have a state by state primary. And the first state, is the one that I have been focusing my attention on and I feel very, very confident we’re going to do well.”

Santorum insisted that national polls are not a “predictor of anything.”

“And you know, Donald’s not been in the political realm that much,” suggested Santorum. “He probably doesn’t understand these things. But the fact is, we go state by state. And I feel very comfortable when those votes are cast we’re going to be in good shape.”

Santorum explained, “What found four years ago is people are going to go through a lot of different candidates. According to the Des Moines Register poll, 88 percent of Iowans have not made up their mind yet.”

“When I won four years ago, over 50 percent of the people who voted for me decided in the last three days,” claimed Santorum.

“This is a wide open race now. Anything can happen. And the idea we’re going to start culling candidates or creating top tiers and bottom tiers which is what the national party and the networks have done, to me is a travesty to this election and something that needs to be stopped and allow every candidate to be heard who has a right to be heard.”
