Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, a progressive Democrat who has been trying to run to the left of Hillary Clinton, won applause during Saturday night’s Democratic presidential debate in Iowa by referring to Republican Donald Trump as an “immigrant-bashing carnival barker.”

While Republicans often argue illegal immigration keeps wages down for middle class Americans, O’Malley also went on to argue wages would rise by legalizing immigrants who are unlawfully here in the country.

“The truth of the matter is if we want wages to go up, we’ve got to get 11 million of our neighbors out of the off-the-book shadow economy and into the full light of the American economy,” O’Malley argued. “That’s what our parents and grandparents always did. That’s what we need to do as a nation.”

Saturday’s debate was the second for the Democratic candidates. Those participating were O’Malley, Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
