The Indianapolis Star is liveblogging Jared Fogle’s sentencing hearing for having sex with minors and distributing child pornography. I wish that wasn’t a sentence that made sense in the English language, but here we are.

Here’s the latest update, regarding Fogle’s defense by attorney Andrew DeVooght:

DeVooght is giving a closing argument. He started by saying he’s not excusing Fogle’s “despicable” behavior.

He noted that many judges and defense attorneys believe federal sentences are too harsh in child porn cases.

Despite all of the material involved in the investigation, there’s no evidence that Fogle played an “active role in the production,” DeVooght said.

You know you’re in trouble when your best defense is that you don’t actually make child pornography.

Yes, every American has the right to a fair trial. Yes, innocent people are sometimes falsely accused of horrible crimes. But there’s no glimmer of innocence here, in any sense of the word. Fogle has admitted to all of it. How does a lawyer sleep at night after a day defending a creep like this?

Oh wait, I forgot: lawyer.

I certainly don’t want to go back to the days of burning undesirables like Jared Fogle at the stake. Or pulling out their entrails as they watch, or stretching them out on the rack, or any of that sort of barbarism.

I don’t want Jared Fogle to be fed to wild dogs while a panel of celebrity judges critiques the pitch of his dying screams. I don’t want him to be waterboarded every hour, on the hour, for the rest of his natural life. I don’t want him to be gagged, strapped into a chair, and forced to watch a restaurant full of people happily eating Subway sandwiches every day until eventually he starves to death.

I don’t want any of that to happen.

I wouldn’t even want an active role in the production of a movie about it. But it’d sure be fun to watch.

P.S. It just keeps getting worse: Jared Fogle pleads guilty, blames diet for his sex crimes. Well, I don’t have any sympathy for the Subway people. He was talking about this crap openly for years, and yet they had no idea?

P.P.S. His sentence gained some weight. The Feds asked for a maximum of 12 years, and he got 15.
