The Dartmouth College administrator who attacked conservatives in the wake of a Black Lives Matter protest that harassed white students at the school’s library has issued a public apology, though only for part of what she said.

A week ago, Black Lives Matter protesters at Dartmouth grabbed national headlines when they paraded into the school’s Baker-Berry library. According to eyewitness accounts published at The Tab and The Dartmouth Review, the protest quickly grew out of hand, with activists harassing individual students and perhaps even berating one student as a “filthy white bitch.”

But in the wake of the protest, vice provost for student affairs Inge-Lise Ameer’s chief concern was apologizing to the protesters for hostile media coverage they received.

“There’s a whole conservative world out there that’s not being very nice,” Ameer said to the protesters at a Monday night meeting. She described the protest as a “wonderful, beautiful thing” and dismissed criticisms of it as “ridiculous,” even though the protesters’ behavior appears to violate Dartmouth’s own code of student conduct.

Now, after several days of very public backlash against the college, Ameer has admitted she went too far by publicly criticizing conservatives.

“This paper and other media outlets have reported on the demonstrations that occurred on campus last Thursday, and follow-up meetings I held with concerned students,” Ameer said in a letter to The Dartmouth. “In one of the meetings, I said something completely off-base regarding Americans with conservative political views. To my discredit, I suggested they are not nice people.  For this, I offer an unequivocal apology.”

“Part of my job is to listen to every student,” she continued. “I now know that not everyone agreed with the tactics deployed by those protesting. The vice provost for student affairs is here to support all students.  I reiterate my offer to meet with any student at any time.” Ameer’s wording is interesting, implying that it simply never crossed her mind that some students disliked the tactics displayed by the protesters.

But while she apologized for what she said about conservatives, Ameer said nothing regarding her clear endorsement of the protesters’ cause, or her suggestion that protesters report any hostility they encountered (such as having doors closed in their face) to Dartmouth’s security department so the perpetrators could be punished.
