UPDATE: The man mentioned in this story as “Phuc Dat Bich” pulled a hoax. His real name is apparently Joe Carr, and Carr claims it done to expose people who make fun of cultural names. “To those who do have culturally specific and spectacular names, ignore the ignorance in those who may try to put you down. Continue being the best person you can be and make your mark on the world in whatever way you can – even if it is a simple prank,” Carr wrote.

Carr wrote, “I’ve never believed it’s necessary for it to be mandatory to have your entire name to be published on social media. People should be free to use any name they desire.” Whether his name is really Joe Carr is not known.

Original story:

Imagine being banned from Facebook because no one believes your name is your real name, instead they think it a dirty joke. One man doesn’t have to imagine, it’s been his life.

Phuc Dat Bich, 23, an Australian of Vietnamese descent, just wanted to have a Facebook page like all his friends, but Facebook didn’t believe his name was a real name, so it kept banning him.

Exasperated, Bich posting a picture in January of his passport to prove he wasn’t trying to pull a fast one.

I find it highly irritating the fact that nobody seems to believe me when I say that my full legal name is how you see it. I’ve been accused of using a false and misleading name of which I find very offensive. Is it because I’m Asian? Is it?
Having my fb shut down multiple times and forced to change my name to my “real” name, so just to put it out there. My name.

Yours sincerely,
Phuc Dat Bich

The trick seems to have worked, Phuc’s Facebook pages has not been deleted since. The resulting publicity has garnered Bich more than 17,000 followers.
