A new interview reveals Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes gave Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump a tongue lashing after his incendiary Megyn Kelly remarks.

In an interview with Adweek Magazine published Sunday, Ailes talks about his relationship with Trump after the candidate mocked Kelly following the August Fox News debate, apparently suggesting she was tough on him because she was menstruating. Kelly asked Trump about his previous statements calling women “fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals.” Trump mocked Kelly, saying “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.

“I did call him after the first go-round and I said, ‘What the hell is wrong with you?'” says Ailes, interviewing as a result of his selection as Adweek’s Media Visionary of 2015. “‘The United States is at war with every goddamn country in the Middle East and you’re at war with Megyn Kelly and you think that looks good? It doesn’t look good.'”

Ailes says Trump is a longtime friend.

“Look, I’ve always had the same relationship with Donald for 30 years,” Ailes says. “It’s a friendly relationship, surprisingly enough.”

Trump later clarified his statement on Twitter.

Real Clear Politics‘ polling average has Donald Trump at about 29 percent with Ben Carson second just under 20 percent.
