Monkeys in a Crimean zoo were given blankets to cope with the cold as blackouts induced by an explosion cutting off power to the area continue.

“The monkey’s compound is not heated yet,” Oleg Zubkov, the Yalta zoo’s director, told Novosti Kryma last week. “But with cold weather coming next week, we’ll have to figure out a way to keep the 250 monkeys we have warm.”

Russia is accusing Ukraine of sabotaging Crimea’s power supply by setting off the explosions last week that damaged key electricity pylons and left the peninsula reliant on generators and a rotating system of blackouts. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March, 2014.

Zoo staff began handing out blankets to the monkeys last week. “This very night the chimps will be feeling cold,” Zubkov added. “We will of course be trying to keep them warm with blankets during the night, but that is not an ultimate solution.”

Reuters captured some of the monkeys with the blankets on video.
