The National Rifle Association thanked President Barack Obama in a statement Tuesday for signing several pro-gun measures into law when he signed the National Defense Authorization Act last week.
The massive defense budget authorization bill includes several NRA-backed measures, including expanded gun rights for personnel on U.S. military bases and a measure that bans the Environmental Protection Agency from prohibiting traditional ammunition. The NRA opened the press release by giving credit to Obama for signing the bill and concluded by thanking lawmakers who supported it.
“The enactment of these common sense, NRA-backed provisions into law is a result of the American people electing a pro-Second Amendment majority to the United States Congress,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, said in the statement. “On behalf of all our members, I want to thank all those lawmakers who stood firmly on the side of freedom.”
One measure would create a process by which commanders on U.S. military bases could allow service members assigned there to carry a firearm, and is a response to a July shooting at two Tennessee recruiting centers that left four Marines and a police officer dead.
The prohibition on the EPA banning ammunition is in response to efforts by anti-hunting groups to get the EPA to ban lead ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act. A third measure allows the Army to sell warehoused pistols to the public, which the NRA said would save taxpayers about $200,000 a year.
Obama signed the bill after vetoing an earlier version he thought upped defense spending in a way that was unfair to domestic spending. The follow up version sailed through the House and Senate, after he reached a budget deal with Republicans. Just three senators and 58 congressmen voted against the bill.
