A Jordanian national with an American passport tried to hijack a German flight bound for Serbia in what may have been an attempt to take the passengers “with him to Allah” Sunday.

A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt, Germany, to Belgrade, Serbia, was in Austrian airspace when the man made his way toward the cockpit and shouted “I’ll open the door of the plane!” He was quickly neutralized by two passengers and members of the cabin crew and the plane made its way to Belgrade safely.

The man behaved strangely from the moment he got on the plane and changed seats several times, witnesses report. There are conflicting reports over the motive behind the attempted hijack. Tabloid The Daily Kurir reports the man “lost his mind and wanted to take them all together with him to Allah.

Milan Djukic, president of Serbian handball team HC Vojvodina, which was on the flight, said the man simply appeared to be “psychologically unstable.” Serbian police questioned the passenger but have yet to release a statement on the incident.

The Daily Kurir released a video of the arrest in Belgrade.
