A petition to ban Donald Trump from the U.K. reached 100,000 signatures in one day, making the proposition eligible for debate on the parliament floor.
The petition, which has reached 163,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning, was created after Trump’s proposition to ban all Muslims from entering the United States. The petition claims Trump should be excluded for “hate speech.”
The petition has support from several members of parliament, including home affairs spokesman Jack Dromey and Green Party leader Natalie Bennett. Conservative MP Sarah Wollaston said the parliament will now have a “serious discussion” about moving forward with the ban.
The question for the MPs is whether or not Trump’s behavior falls under the shield of “unacceptable behaviors or extremism exclusion policy,” which could make him inadmissible to the country.
Speech laws in Britain are stricter than in the U.S., and “hostility” against people based on race, religion and sexual orientation, among other things, is considered a criminal offense.
People that have been banned in a similar manner in recent years include Islamist preachers and Ku Klux Klan officials, as well as two anti-Muslim bloggers.
Trump made headlines in the UK for saying parts of London are “so radicalized the police are afraid for their lives.”
