A Colorado county clerk’s anti-gay marriage stance has furious gay marriage advocates comparing him to Kentucky clerk Kim Davis.

Elbert County Clerk Dallas Schroeder put a sign above his desk that reads “…each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband,” a biblical quote from 1 Corinthians 7:2. Schroeder argues the quote is merely a celebration of marriage, but Americans United for Separation of Church and State disagree.

It sent a letter to the county this week demanding the sign be taken down. In the letter, It claims to have an email between coworkers where Schroeder explains his thinking behind the sign.

“My thought process is that they have to see the poster,” the email from Schroeder reads. “And if they choose to violate God’s written Word, then that is on their head. I have warned them.”

It cites this as proof that Schroeder’s sign is religiously motivated discrimination against same-sex couples. The group argues the sign violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment as well as the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the 14th Amendment.

“Although he’s apparently more creative than Roy Moore and Kim Davis, the Elbert County Clerk is acting unlawfully all the same,” AU Senior Litigation Counsel Gregory M. Lipper says in a statement. “Just as the county clerk may not disparage interracial couples when they obtain their marriage licenses, he may not demean same-sex couples seeking the same government benefit.”

The group has demanded a response by Christmas Eve.
