Reports that a Paris preschool teacher was stabbed in the throat and stomach Monday by a hooded man shouting allegiance to Islamic State are a hoax, according to the New York Times.

The man allegedly stabbed the teacher while saying “it is for Daech [ISIS], it is a warning,” reported Le Parisien. In reality, the teacher, a 20-year veteran, manufactured the entire incident as he was preparing for class just before his students arrived.

“[It] was a fake attempt, done so that he could have himself transferred,” said an official speaking anonymously. The teacher’s injuries are reported to be non-life threatening. Monday’s fake attack follows the tragic events in Paris last month that saw 134 killed in coordinated shootings and suicide bombings across the city.

Though the incident was fake, ISIS has called for attacks on schools for some time now. In November, a professor at a Jewish school was attacked in Marseilles in the south of France by several individuals yelling anti-Semitic remarks holding up a T-shirt adorned with ISIS logos.

ISIS encourages school attacks through its magazine Dar al-Islam. The magazine, written in French, is part of a large propaganda machine called Al-Hayat that also publishes the English-language magazine Dabiq. The two magazines have high production value, with high-resolution photographs and remarkably professional layouts.

French officials responded to the attack, before it was revealed to be a hoax, by increasing police presence at schools and are treating the event as a terrorist attack.

Editor’s Note: This story previously reported on the alleged attack and has been updated to reflect that it is a hoax.
