A group of Australian artists, one of whom is a so-called “sex clown,” collected $10,000 of taxpayer funds to perform a play Saturday lamenting Christmas’s alleged negative effects on the environment.

The publicly-funded demonstration garnered an audience of 70 people at Sydney University and was given the okay by Australian politician Clover Moore. According to The Daily Telegraph (Paywall), Moore spent approximately $142 per audience member on the poorly-attended event which was described by coordinators as a “Christmas Climate Change Variety Hour.”

One of the participants in the demonstration, Betty Grumble — whose website describes her as a “surreal showgirl, obscene beauty queen, feminist contagion & sex clown” — pranced about on stage in a “cape, knee-high boots, an oversized tiara and tassels on her nipples,” according to The Daily Telegraph.

At one point during the show, Grumble can be seen wearing little more than tassels and a tiara while tossing phony cash at her on-stage assistant, a man clad only in underwear and a lamb mask, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The jokes and parities at the so-called “Variety Hour” included a skit suggesting “disappearing arctic ice is making it difficult for Santa to land his sleigh; and that Australia’s love of Christmas hams will lead to the extinction of pigs by 2050.”

Pamphlets advertising the show claimed: “Make no mistake. Christmas and climate change are already intertwined.” The pamphlets, also paid for by the Australian taxpayers, blamed Christmas for climate degredation, declaring “Christmas is a key event on the capitalist calendar … the climate implications of this profitable version of Christmas are inescapable. Can modern Christmas traditions ever be sustainable?”

Sydney council member, Ed Mandla, was not so kind to Moore’s taxpayer-funded display, telling The Daily Telegraphy that “I’d get more laughs if I got up and talked about the last council meeting.”
