Islamic State’s African division, Boko Haram, killed 80 people with suicide bombers and rocket-propelled grenades in attacks on a Nigerian city and town Monday. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari recently stated the organization was “technically defeated.”

The Islamic extremist terrorists targeted a market and a mosque. Nigerian military forces were able to kill 10 suicide bombers. According to witnesses, Boko Haram attempted to kill as many people as possible and selected victims at random.

The suicide bomber that targeted the mosque was a female suicide bomber. When she detonated her vest, she killed one person besides herself and injured several others. Two other suicide bombers that successfully detonated their vests were also women.

ISIS militants targeted Maiduguri, a city with a population of over one million people. Due to ISIS’ African insurgency, Maiduguri’s population has almost doubled with displaced people. Internal displacement has become a large problem for Nigeria as UNICEF reported last week one million kids can’t go to school because of militant activity.

Maiduguri is where Boko Haram was founded. Another attack Monday targeted the town of Madagali.

The wave of attacks comes after ISIS militants successfully killed 14 people in the Nigerian village of Kimba on Christmas. The terrorists approached the village riding bicycles, murdered people and set homes on fire.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is coming under increasing pressure in Nigeria to put an end to Boko Haram’s campaign of death and destruction. Nigeria has been battling against Islamic extremist insurgents for six years.

Nigerian military spending is being squandered through corruption which has greatly frustrated the Nigerian people. The former national security adviser of the Nigerian government is on trial for corruption charges. He allegedly stole over $2 billion which was designated for purchasing weapons for the military to fight ISIS militants.
