At a campaign rally earlier this week in Hilton Head, S.C., Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump warned his audience that Democrat Bernie Sanders is poised to raise taxes so high that no one will be able to afford to play golf.

“We have to be progressive in our thinking,” Trump said — placing great emphasis on the word “thinking.”

“When I say ‘progressive,’ I mean, like, smart,” Trump explained, thrusting his right fist toward the audience in full 3-D motion.

“I’m not talking progressive like a Bernie Sanders would say,” the real estate tycoon continued — to great laughter by many in the audience.

“This guy wants to tax you — think of it — this guy wants to raise your taxes to 90 percent,” Trump then said, as a smattering of boos concerning such taxation broke out. “No, no, think. You’ll have to move out — I love this area by the way, I’ve been here many times. Great golfing area, right? We love it. No more golf — no more golf. You won’t have any golf any more. You won’t have any money left to be golfing.”

Sanders, 74, has advocated for massive tax increases. The self-described socialist has said repeatedly that he expects to raise the highest tax rates over 50 percent — but nowhere near 90 percent.

Trump, 69, is an avid golfer. The Ivy League graduate’s estimated net worth is in the billions. He has been leading Republican primary polls for months. According to The New York Times, Trump’s strongest supporters tend to be still-registered Democrats who have come to identify as Republicans. However, his supporters form a diverse coalition.
