An American expat couple has been arrested in Spain after police found the decomposing corpse of their seven year old son in the family’s apartment, police told reporters Wednesday. It seems the son died four weeks ago according to Spanish authorities.

The couple were living in the town of Girona in the autonomous Catalonia region of Spain. The father and mother of the deceased child are 39 and 38 respectively. Besides the seven year old son, the couple are also the parents of a 14 year old and a 12 year old.

Police found the child’s body when they were asked to access the apartment by the landlord since the family had not paid rent since September. Upon entering the apartment, the authorities smelled a strong odor that led them to the room where they found the child’s body. The outward appearance of the body did not lead the authorities to suspect the child died in a violent manner.

Spanish media has reported but not confirmed that the father may have worked for the U.S. Consulate.

“We are aware of reports of the detention of two U.S. citizens in connection with the death of a minor child,” a State Department official told The Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement. “The Department of State provides all possible consular assistance whenever a U.S. citizen is detained abroad. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment.”

No one affiliated with the U.S. Consulate in Barcelona has been suspected or detained in connection with this case.”
