Arizona Sen. John McCain said Wednesday he thinks it’s “worth looking into” Sen. Ted Cruz’s eligibility to be president.

In an interview on “the Chris Merrill Show” in Phoenix, Ariz., on Wednesday, McCain said, “I know that came up in my race because I was born in Panama. But I was born in the Canal Zone, which is a territory. Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona when it was a territory when he ran in 1964. … It’s a U.S. military base.” (VIDEO: Trump: Cruz’s Birth Status ‘A Problem For Him’)

McCain, who was born on the U.S. military base in the Canal Zone said, “That’s different from being born on foreign soil. So I think there is a question. I am not a constitutional scholar on that. But I think it’s worth looking into. I don’t think it’s illegitimate to look into it.”

The U.S. Constitution requires the president to be a “natural born citizen.” Cruz was born in Calgary, Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father. Ted Cruz has renounced his Canadian citizenship. (RELATED: Ted Cruz Renounces His Canadian Citizenship)
