A former New Hampshire union president was sentenced to two years probation Tuesday for abusing his position to steal $13,493 from members, according to court filings.

Gregory Paradis served as president of the Seabrook Nuclear Security Officers Association from 2011 to 2012. His position gave him access to the union bank account, which he used for personal gain. He pleaded guilty to federal charges and was ordered to payback the funds he took.

At first, however, he tried to dodge blame when the union vice-president confronted him.

“Paradis initially denied committing the thefts and blamed the account deficiency on an error by the bank maintaining the account,” the U.S. Department of Justice detailed in a statement. “Paradis eventually admitted he stole the funds and helped the law enforcement agencies determine the amount of money he stole.”

Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) launched an investigation after the vice president notified local police. The investigation involved federal and local law enforcement. The agencies found that Paradis used a union debit card to buy personal items without authorization.

“Paradis eventually admitted he stole the funds and helped the law enforcement agencies determine the amount of money he stole,” the Justice Department also noted. “Paradis was also ordered to repay $13,493.90 to the union.”

Fraud and corruption within the labor movement is a problem. OLMS indicted 100 separate cases of union corruption in 2014 alone. New Hampshire U.S. District Court Judge Landya McCaffery issued the sentencing.
