A 24-year-old man was dragged to death Wednesday night when his coat got caught in the doors of the Paris Metro.

As he was exiting the high-speed train around 11 p.m. in the city’s 15th arrondissement, the doors closed on the back of the man’s coat and he was unable to free himself as the train took off, reported the Independent. He was dragged several meters along the length of the platform, as commuters reportedly looked on in horror.

The driver did not realize the man was being dragged along until the train reached the next station of Line 6, where emergency workers were called to the scene, according to Le Parisien. They were unable to revive the man, and pronounced him dead at the scene by electrocution.

Paris Metro authorities told Le Figaro a criminal investigation is underway.
