A judge who accused the Reagan administration of “bigotry” is expected to be confirmed Tuesday by the Republican-led Senate for an Obama-appointed federal judgeship in Minnesota.
Justice Wilhelmina Wright, who currently sits on the Minnesota Supreme Court, accused former President Ronald Reagan and Chief Justice William Rehnquist in 1989 of helping white people avoid desegregated public schools, reported The Daily Signal.
“Their mad scramble is aided by a Chief Justice who owned racially restrictive property and a Presidential administration that believes bigotry, poverty, and poor educational opportunities for most public school students are the unavoidable fruits of a ‘thriving’ free market economy,” Wright wrote for the UCLA Law Review, just prior to graduating from Harvard Law.
The Senate is expected to confirm Wright for the position Tuesday, as she has advanced through the Judiciary Committee by means of a voice vote. Should Wright be confirmed, she would become the first black, female federal district judge to serve in Minnesota.
“This is more than anything the pivotal moment,” Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who recommended Wright’s nomination to Obama along with Democratic Sen. Al Franken, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “All expectations are that she will pass.”
