Georgia Democratic Rep. [crscore]John Lewis[/crscore] says Barack Obama has been treated different “because of his race.”

In an interview with CNBC’s John Harwood, Lewis denied that Obama made America anymore divided, claiming, “I don’t think he made it worse. I think there were people, because of his election, made a conscious decision and said, that we will not give him a victory.”

“I don’t think this president, I don’t think he’s solely responsible for the country being so divided. We all are responsible for it,” Lewis argued.

“Obama [is] being treated different because of, because of his race,” Lewis argued. “I really believe that. You wouldn’t hear had it been a white Democrat or a white Republican speaking, hear someone holler out “you lie.” A member of the Republican Party from South Carolina.”

Harwood followed up, “You think that was race?”

“I think part of that was race. And you wouldn’t have a governor putting her finger in the face of a white president,” Lewis said. “I think there have been a visible signs of disrespect for the man. And I’ve always said, if you don’t respect the man, respect the position.”

When Jan Brewer was governor of Arizona, she pointed her finger directly at Obama in 2012. Rep. [crscore]Joe Wilson[/crscore] yelled, “You lie” at Obama during a 2009 speech to a joint session of Congress.
