Speaking to reporters for the first time since being released from Iranian prison, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati credited his training for helping him withstand the “very inhumane and unjust” treatment he experienced during his captivity.

“I didn’t want to let my fellow Marines down and the reputation of the Marine Corps,” explained Hekmati, one of five Iranian-held Americans released over the weekend. (RELATED: Five Americans To Be Released From Iranian Prison)

“I tried my best to keep my head up and withstand all the pressures put upon me, some of which very inhumane and unjust,” he continued. “Hearing about some of my fellow Marines supporting me really gave me the strength to put up with — over four years — some very difficult times.”

Hekmati finished the interview by thanking “all the Marines out there” with a very grateful “Semper Fi.”
