Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is shown beating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by 1 percentage point in a poll released by CBS just days ahead of the Iowa Caucuses.
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley lagged behind the other Democratic 2016 presidential hopefuls with just 5 percent in the Hawkeye State.
Clinton, once considered a shoo-in for the nomination, lags far behind Sanders in New Hampshire – polling at 38 percent and 57 percent respectively. O’Malley once again received just 5 percent.
While Sanders may have an advantage in the first two early states, Clinton is way ahead in South Carolina with a 22 point advantage at 60 percent to Sander’s 38 percent. O’Malley registered at 0 percent in the Palmetto State according to the online survey.
Just one month ago, Clinton held a 5-point lead over Sanders in the CBS/YouGov poll in Iowa.
The self-described socialist told The Washington Post Saturday he believes the former first lady is running a “desperate campaign.”
“When Hillary Clinton’s hit man is throwing garbage at the media, she is in a sense making it harder for me to win the general election,” he told the paper. “Our campaign is not going to simply sit back and accept all of these attacks.”
The Iowa caucuses are set to be held Feb. 1.
