An elementary school principal was killed this week as she was pushing several children out of the way of an oncoming school bus that had jumped a sidewalk curb.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon just after dismissal at Amy Beverland Elementary School in the suburbs of Indianapolis, The Indianapolis Star reports.

The principal was Susan Jordan.

The bus hit Jordan and two of the children she was pushing out of the way.

Jordan died at the scene.

Paramedics transported the two injured children, both 10 years old, to a local hospital. They are in serious but stable condition.

There were 25 children on the bus at the time of the incident. None were injured.

An investigation into the cause of the bus’s curb jump is ongoing. Police say the unidentified bus driver did not appear to be impaired.

The bus passed an Indiana State Police inspection just last week.

The crash sent parents who had come to pick up their children into a scramble as ambulances and police cars began to show up all at once.

Jordan was, by all accounts, a widely beloved principal.

“Quite frankly, ladies and gentlemen, we are talking about a legend,” school district superintendent Shawn A. Smith said at a press conference, according to the Star.

In May, a throng of teachers, staffers and students had posted a glowing YouTube tribute to Jordan.

“We love you, Mrs. Jordan!” was the video’s closing. “Amy Beverland really is the sunshine after the rainbow. Thank you for your many years of leadership!”

“She loved those kids,” Bob Kelley, Jordan’s brother, told local ABC affiliate WRTV.

Jordan was 69 years old. She had been the principal at Amy Beverland Elementary for 22 years.

She is survived by two daughters. Both live in the Indianapolis are with their families.

Amy Beverland Elementary was closed on Wednesday. The U.S. flag outside the school flew at half-staff.
